“Don’t,” Pepper said at once, reaching for his sleeve again but not quite touching it.  ”I…” she hesitates.  ”Tony did this,” she said finally.  There’s another stilted pause.  ”If I go to the hospital, the media will find out.”

Phil stopped in his tracks at the words. “…What?”

“Go with me.  Please.”  Pepper tried to tuck her hand into Phil’s elbow.  ”Somewhere else.  I have a car.”

For the space of two breaths, Pepper watches his face, as if she can see through those white cobwebbed eyes, and she adds.  ”You’re my friend.  We trust each other.”

“Wholeheartedly”, He started. “But my better judgement is persuading me to call this one in, Pepper. What Stark has done is unacceptable.”
